Let’s talk about the health benefits of wine.
Moderation is Key
There is a lot of research being done on the health benefits of wine. No matter which study you look at, the word “moderation” is key. Moderate consumption of wine provides the most health benefits. Moderate consumption is defined as up to one 5-ounce glass of wine per day for women, and up to two 5-ounce glasses for men. Drinking more than the recommended amount reduces the benefit, and increases the risk. Certain cancers, heart disease, and cognitive decline are some of the dangers of heavy drinking. If you have any health concerns or chronic conditions, always check with your doctor to be sure that daily wine consumption is beneficial for you.
Health Benefits of Wine for Your Heart
One glass of wine per day can boost your heart health. “The association between moderate alcohol intake and lower risk of heart attack has been well-studied for 50 years,” says Kenneth Mukamal, MD, MPH, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who has researched the topic extensively. Studies suggest that men who were moderate drinkers are 30 to 35 percent less likely to have a heart attack than those who did not drink at all. Women showed slightly less benefit at 23 percent.
Health Benefits of Wine for Your Brain
A glass of wine a day may keep your mind sharp. Studies have linked the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant properties of wine to a reduced risk of dementia. Resveratrol is the main compound in wine that is being studied for its positive effect on the aging body. Researchers are interested in wine’s blood thinning properties plus resveratrol’s anti-oxidant properties and how they might work to preserve motor function, slow aging, increase cognitive function and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.
